May 5, 2026 – Residents in Decatur are invited to take part in a meaningful evening of remembrance later this month, as HSHS Home Care hosts a memorial butterfly release ceremony.

The event will take place Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Cancer Center Garden at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital.

The ceremony offers families and friends a chance to celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed. The event will include a reading of names in honor of those being remembered, followed by the release of butterflies—a symbolic gesture representing transformation and the enduring impact of those lost.

“These butterfly release ceremonies provide a special time for families in our communities to honor their loved ones,” said Valerie Engelbart. “The butterfly represents the transformation of the spirit as our loved ones transition from this life. As we release butterflies together, we celebrate the lives that have touched our hearts and find comfort in our shared experiences of love and loss.”

Community members are welcome to attend the ceremony at no cost. Those wishing to participate more personally may reserve a butterfly to release in honor of a loved one for $15. Reservations must be made in advance.

To RSVP or purchase a butterfly, individuals can contact Engelbart by phone or text at 217-685-0702 or by email. Additional information about the ceremony and other services is available through Hospital Sisters Health System.

Organizers say the event is designed to bring comfort, connection, and a shared space for reflection for anyone experiencing loss.
