May 11, 2026 – The Salvation Army is celebrating National Salvation Army Week from May 11 through May 17, recognizing the organization’s longstanding mission of serving communities across the country, including Decatur and Macon County.
The annual observance was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 to honor the organization’s humanitarian work and community impact.
The Salvation Army has served Decatur and Macon County since 1888, providing assistance to individuals and families facing hunger, homelessness, and crisis situations.
Located at The Salvation Army Decatur Corps Community Center on West Main Street, the organization offers a variety of support services including food assistance, clothing, shelter support, and its “Pathway of Hope” program aimed at helping families break cycles of generational poverty.
“National Salvation Army Week is an opportunity to celebrate the generosity of our supporters, the dedication of our volunteers, and the resilience of those we serve,” said Major Randy Summitt. “It is a reminder that together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors.”
Nationally, The Salvation Army says it serves nearly 25 million Americans each year through programs that include food distribution, emergency shelter, disaster relief, and rehabilitation services. The organization operates more than 7,000 service centers nationwide.
Officials say National Salvation Army Week is also intended to raise awareness about opportunities for residents to volunteer, donate, and support local outreach efforts throughout the year.
