June 2, 2026 – The Macon County Health Department and the Macon Mosquito Abatement District are partnering to host a tire recycling event later this month aimed at reducing mosquito breeding sites and protecting public health.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Macon Mosquito Abatement District, 4170 N. Bearsdale Road in Decatur. Residents are asked to approach the facility from the south on Bearsdale Road.

Organizers say unused and discarded tires often collect standing water, creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. By providing a convenient disposal option, officials hope to help reduce mosquito populations and lower the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses throughout Macon County.

The event is open to Macon County residents only. Participants must provide two forms of proof of residency, such as a driver’s license and utility bill, at the time of drop-off.

Up to 10 rimless passenger tires will be accepted per household. Lawnmower tires, motorcycle tires, semi-truck tires, tractor tires and tires from commercial tire shops will not be accepted.
