June 3, 2026 – The Decatur Municipal Band will bring Disney magic to Central Park on Monday, June 15, with its second annual Family Concert, part of the band’s summer concert series.
The free event begins at 6 p.m. with a variety of family-friendly activities before the concert starts at 7 p.m. Activities include story performances by the Decatur Public Library’s READiculous group, a children’s sing-along led by Decatur Public Schools music teacher and band member Iris Leahy, and a costume contest featuring categories for royalty, hero, and most creative.
The concert will feature music from popular Disney films and television shows, including selections from Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland, Mulan, The Incredibles, and Frozen II. Decatur-area native and frequent Municipal Band soloist Kristin Moore will be featured as a vocalist. The performance will be conducted by longtime band director Jim Culbertson.
Additional activities throughout the evening will include a costume parade, children’s music activities, face painting, Disney trivia, a photo booth, and magic and balloon sculptures by The Amazing Dudley.
Food vendors Dipped & Delicious, D-Boe’s Wingz and Cuisine, and 343 BBQ will have food available for purchase.
The event is partially funded through a grant from the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation.
Directed by Jim Culbertson since 1979, the Decatur Municipal Band is made up of high school and college students as well as adult musicians from across the community. Founded in 1857, the organization is one of the oldest continuously operating nonmilitary bands in the United States and Canada.
