June 8, 2026 – Residents interested in serving their community through elected office will have an opportunity to learn the process during a free educational seminar later this summer.
Community volunteer Ayn Owens will host “How To Run For Public Office” on Wednesday, August 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The seminar is designed to help prospective candidates understand the requirements and procedures for seeking local office.
Macon County Clerk Josh Tanner will serve as the primary presenter. Tanner will explain filing requirements, important deadlines, and the paperwork needed to become a candidate. The seminar will also cover topics including residency requirements, eligibility rules, and how local property tax dollars are distributed among various government entities.
Owens said the goal is to encourage more informed participation in local government and elections.
“I feel very strongly there is a need to inform people how to do the basic elements to properly register to run for public office in our area,” Owens said. “We need more informed people involved in the process of running for public office and voting in our local elections.”
Owens said Tanner was selected to lead the presentation because of his expertise in election procedures and candidate filings.
The seminar will also examine the responsibilities of local elected officials, including how school board members and other governing bodies make decisions that affect local tax levies and public services.
There is no charge to attend. For more information, call 217-791-1385.
