July 21, 2026 – As summer crops continue to grow across central Illinois, drivers are being reminded to use extra caution on rural roads where tall corn can create unexpected hazards.
The U of I extension says corn plants have reached heights that can block views, hide intersections, and make it harder to see traffic signs, farm equipment, and approaching vehicles. Drivers traveling through agricultural areas are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, and take extra time at stops, yields, and blind intersections.
Tall grass along roadsides and ditches can also create additional challenges, including reduced visibility and increased wildlife activity.
Farmers are also being reminded to continue practicing safe equipment operation, including driving at safe speeds, checking their surroundings, and being aware of blind spots while operating machinery near roadways.
Drivers sharing the road with farm equipment should slow down, avoid blind spots, and give equipment operators plenty of space and time to safely maneuver.
While planting and harvest seasons may not be underway, agricultural activity continues throughout the summer. Safety officials say a little extra caution from everyone on the road can help prevent crashes and keep rural communities safe.
