July 22, 2026 – The Decatur Family YMCA will expand its annual Backpack Attack program this year by providing hygiene kits for older students in addition to backpacks filled with school supplies.
The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, with 1,500 backpacks available while supplies last. Students must be present to receive a backpack.
Distribution will take place at three locations across Decatur:
- Decatur Family YMCA, 220 W. McKinley Ave., where families can also visit a community resource vendor fair.
- Macon County Health Department, 1221 E. Condit St., offering vaccinations, dental exams and other health-related services.
- Johns Hill Magnet School, 1025 E. Johns Ave., with pickup through the west-end circle drive near South Maffit Street.
YMCA Director of Development Shyler Kraus said the goal is to help children and teens start the school year feeling prepared, supported and confident. She said adding hygiene kits this year allows the program to better meet the needs of older students.
