August 2, 2026 – Residents interested in serving their community or learning more about local government are invited to attend a free educational seminar on how to run for public office.
Hosted by community volunteer Ayn Owens, the nonpartisan event, “How to Run for Public Office,” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Children’s Auditorium on the second floor of the Decatur Public Library.
Macon County Clerk Josh Tanner will serve as the primary presenter, explaining the process of running for office, including required paperwork, petition signatures, filing deadlines and where candidates must submit their documents. The seminar will also cover eligibility requirements, voter registration and the role local government bodies play in determining property tax levies.
“We need community members to understand they have the opportunity to run for a public office,” Owens said. “Our community needs more informed people involved in the process of running for public office and voting in our local elections.”
Owens said the event is also designed to encourage residents to become more engaged in local government by attending public meetings and learning how local decisions affect the community.
