August 9, 2026 – More than 50 local students headed back to school with new clothes, shoes and a confidence boost thanks to the Decatur Police Department’s annual Shop with a Cop event.
Current and retired Decatur police officers, along with their families, accompanied children on shopping trips at Kohl’s, helping them pick out back-to-school clothing and footwear. The event is funded through donations raised by the Police Benevolent and Protective Association (PB&PA) Unit 39.
Clayton Graven, a night shift patrol officer with the Decatur Police Department and the newly elected president of PB&PA Unit 39, said the event is about more than just school supplies.
“For the kids, it allows them to start the school year with confidence,” Graven said. “A lot of families are struggling, and starting school can be intimidating. This gives them a fresh start and a positive interaction with police officers.”
Graven said the event is equally meaningful for officers, who enjoy spending time with children and their families outside of emergency situations.
“The officers really look forward to seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and having those positive interactions in a setting that’s much different than responding to calls,” he said.
Funds for Shop with a Cop are raised through the annual PB&PA Golf Outing and Car Show.
