August 26, 2026 – The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in Illinois this year.
The case involves a resident of Piatt County. IDPH has also identified three probable cases in northern Illinois.
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who contract the virus do not develop symptoms, but about one in five may experience fever, headache, body aches, joint pain or other symptoms. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious illness, including meningitis, encephalitis, paralysis or death.
So far this year, West Nile virus has been detected in 50 Illinois counties through positive tests involving mosquitoes, horses or humans.
IDPH is reminding residents to “Fight the Bite” by reducing mosquito breeding areas, using insect repellent and reporting areas of stagnant water.

People over 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.
