September 8, 2026 – Decatur Public Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout September, encouraging residents to discover the resources and services available with a library card.
The annual observance, an initiative of the American Library Association, has been held each September since 1987. The celebration coincides with the beginning of the school year and encourages people to explore the resources available through their local libraries.
This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” highlights the range of services available beyond traditional book borrowing.
Decatur Public Library cardholders can access books, e-books and audiobooks, as well as free streaming movies, television shows and music. The library also offers classes, job resources, homework assistance, study spaces and cultural programs.
Library cards are free, and the library says they can provide students with educational resources while giving adults access to lifelong learning opportunities and community programs.
Children under 14 who receive their first Decatur Public Library card during September will receive a free lanyard and cardholder.
