September 21, 2026 – Northeast Community Fund has announced Shekila Smith as its new Executive Director-CEO.
Smith brings nearly a decade of public-sector experience in federal funding administration, nonprofit program oversight and regulatory compliance to the position.
Before joining Northeast Community Fund, Smith worked with the Illinois State Board of Education, where she oversaw federally funded Child Nutrition Programs and worked with schools, child-care organizations and community organizations throughout Illinois.
Her work included navigating regulatory requirements, strengthening organizational accountability and overseeing the responsible use of public resources.
In her new role, Smith says she plans to build on Northeast Community Fund’s longstanding presence in Decatur while strengthening community partnerships and advancing the organization’s mission.
Smith holds a Master of Public Administration and Policy Analysis and a Bachelor of Arts in Corporate and Organizational Communication.
Her community involvement includes civic engagement and service, and she describes her approach to the new role as community-centered and focused on collaboration and organizational stewardship.
