September 29, 2026 – Library lovers, families and curious community members are invited to explore libraries beyond their usual stops during the 8th Annual Illinois Heartland Library System Library Crawl, taking place October 1st through the 31st.
The month-long event brings participating public libraries across central and southern Illinois together and encourages patrons to discover new libraries, communities, collections, programs and services.
Participation is simple. Patrons can pick up a Library Crawl passport at a participating library, visit other participating libraries throughout October and collect a stamp at each location. Libraries may also offer special activities, giveaways, contests and other events during the crawl.
The goal isn’t necessarily to visit the most libraries. Organizers say the larger purpose is to encourage people to discover the resources available through their library card and explore libraries in neighboring communities.
The Illinois Heartland Library System service area covers more than 28,000 square miles, with more than 500 member libraries serving approximately 2.16 million Illinois residents.
Library hours, activities and participation can vary by location, so patrons are encouraged to check with individual libraries before visiting.
