October 8, 2026- The Illinois State Fire Marshal is reminding residents to practice safe charging habits during Fire Prevention Week, October 4th through 10th.

This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focusing on the safe use of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries found in phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters.

Fire officials recommend using the charger that came with a device or one approved by the manufacturer, and charging devices on a hard, flat surface rather than beds or couches. Residents should also stop using batteries that become unusually hot, swell, smoke or develop a strange odor.

Officials say larger batteries, including those used in e-bikes and scooters, should be charged outside and away from exits. Used batteries should never be placed in household trash or recycling because they can cause fires in garbage trucks and recycling facilities.

Residents can find battery recycling locations through Battery Network’s recycling locator.
