October 15, 2026 – The City of Decatur is launching a targeted neighborhood cleanup program that will allow residents in selected areas to dispose of unwanted household items for free.

The program is being offered in partnership with a local hauler. Residents in targeted neighborhoods will be notified directly by mail and given a designated period to place eligible items at the curb before collection.

Acceptable items include appliances without Freon, carpeting, furniture, scrap metal, wood items and mattresses.

Items that will not be collected include automotive products and fluids, hazardous chemicals, metal fencing, batteries, concrete, rocks, railroad tie lumber and other items not specified by the city that are larger than a household appliance.

The city says it plans to make the service available to as many Decatur neighborhoods as possible. The program is limited to designated areas, and residents should wait for notification before placing items at the curb.
