June 3, 2023 – The Decatur Airport hosted its 15th annual Airport Fun Day at the Decatur Airport Saturday.
Families had the opportunity to “touch a truck” or plane, with vehicles like the Park District’s Striker emergency vehicle, as well as climb aboard a Blackhawk helicopter and a number of small aircraft.
The Experimental Aircraft Association provided free young eagle flights for kids 8-17 that morning. Tim Wright, director of the Decatur airport, said the flights were probably one of the biggest highlights for kids and said the event was expected to provide about 80 flights.
After registration, participants went to “ground control school” where volunteers explained the science behind airplane flight, as well as safety instructions before they received their “flight assignments” to take to the air.
There were other activities as well. Representatives from United Airlines provided coloring, crafts, and an opportunity for children to make their own boarding passes. The day also included a K-9 demonstration and tours of the control tower. The Scovill Mobile Zoo was also on hand, along with dogs from Pawprint Ministries.
Partners included the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aerial Club of Decatur, and Army Aviation Support.
