July 31, 2023 – DPS 61 and Richland Community College will empower nearly 140 students enrolled in the Prep Academy program during a day-long leadership conference held on’s RCC campus tomorrow, August 1.
The Prep Academy is a partnership between DPS and Richland Community College that allows selected high schoolers the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and associate degree from Richland by the time they graduate from MacArthur or Eisenhower High School. Participating students are selected via an application process and begin college-level coursework and preparatory classes during their freshman year. Tuesday’s conference will kick off this year’s programming.
Mia Jackson-Tyus, the Program Coordinator for Richland’s EnRich Minority Mentor Protégé program and CEO of local community organization The Power in Pumps. Five workshops about relationship-building, choice-making, mental wellness and more will be tailored to students’ needs. District leadership said in a press release the goal for Tuesday’s conference is to help program participants develop their time management skills, bolster study habits, explore career pathways and have fun.
