February 25, 2025 –  The American Red Cross of Illinois is calling for the volunteers to join the national Sound the Alarm initiative, aiming to install 50,000 free smoke alarms in at-risk communities across the country.

No prior experience is required, and training will be provided to volunteers. Donations from corporate partners, including State Farm, Motorola Solutions Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Sheild of Illinois, and others, make all services free for residents in need. During the 20 – minute home visits, Red Cross volunteers not only install alarms but also share important information on fire safety.

Mark Thomas, interim CEO of the American Red Cross of Illinois, emphasized the impact of the campaign, “Sound the Alarm is a rewarding campaign that allows our volunteers to not only install smoke alarms but also provide home fire education. In just one day, you could help save a neighbor’s life by installing smoke alarms – which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”

Home fires are one of the country’s most frequent disasters and they claim 7 lives every day in the U.S.
