April 25, 2024 – The Macon County Conservation District, co-sponsored by the Decatur Area Audubon Society, will be celebrating Earth Day with the 43rd Annual Festival of Spring on April 27 from 12-4pm.
Admission to the Festival is free, with the exception of canoeing, which is priced at $3 per person. Here’s a glimpse of what attendees can expect:
Bird Banding (8-10 am)
Dr. Travis Wilcoxen of Millikin University will start the day with a Bird Banding demonstration. Families can witness the delicate process of catching and banding wild songbirds up close at the Information Pavilion.
Sangamon River Cleanup (10 am – 12 pm)
Families can participate in the Sangamon River Cleanup. Help preserve the natural beauty of the riverbanks by joining the cleanup efforts. Registration begins at 9:30 am, and participants are advised to dress appropriately and bring their own gloves.
Birds of Prey Show (12 pm, 1:30 pm, 3 pm)
Families can watch birds of prey with educational shows conducted by the Illinois Raptor Center. Choose from multiple program times and marvel at these creatures at the Rock Springs Nature Center.
Canoeing (1-4 pm)
You can also enjoy a leisurely canoe ride. Novices will not be needed, as a naturalist will provide guidance before setting off. Canoeing equipment is provided at a nominal fee of $3 per person.
Community Organizations
Engage with local environmental organizations and discover the initiatives aimed at conserving nature and wildlife. From the Scovill Zoo to the U of I Extension Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners, there’s plenty to explore and learn about.
Concessions
Replenish your energy with delicious snacks and beverages available at the concession stand, operated by the Macon County Conservation Foundation. Every purchase contributes to the restoration and educational efforts of natural areas.
