June 3, 2024- The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is observing Pride Month in June by participating in various Pride events across the state and highlighting the programs and services it provides to the LGBTQIA+ community. IDPH staff are participating in multiple Pride events throughout June, including the Springfield Pridefest on May 18th and the annual Chicago Pride Parade on June 30th.

“We join with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies across Illinois in the celebration of Pride. Health and well-being center around the ability of every resident to be their true and authentic selves. IDPH is proud to partner with and learn from individuals and organizations around the state this month and every month to improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community.”  said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.

The IDPH offers several programs addressing  health concerns of the LGBTQIA+ community. These include services through the IDPH Division of Vital Records to ensure records accurately reflect an individual’s gender identity. Under a state law effective January 2023, individuals can change the sex designation on their birth records by submitting an affidavit, the Certificate of Correction Request Form, a photocopy of their ID, and a $15 payment, with options for M, F, or X designations. Previously, a physician-completed form was required.

IDPH collaborated with Equality Illinois to make parental designation fields on state birth records more inclusive for same-sex and transgender couples. Since 2020, each parent can choose to be designated as Mother/Parent, Father/Parent, or Parent.

IDPH also offers various programs to address primary health issues and concerns of the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring these services are provided in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Additionally, IDPH has implemented training for staff and partners on culturally-sensitive language and compliance with non-discrimination laws. The department has also adopted a policy of gender-neutral restrooms for all single-stall facilities in its offices statewide.
