Free Tax Service Options in Decatur

February 16, 2021 – Decatur is offering free tax preparation assistance for seniors and families with less than $50,000 in total income and individuals with $25,000 or less in total income. The Decatur-Macon County Senior Center’s tax service information is listed below, with the Decatur Public Library’s free tax service under that.

Senior Center:

Trained AARP Volunteers will provide Income Tax preparation assistance at the Senior Center starting today. For assistance, please call the Senior Center at 429-1239 to schedule an appointment.  Appointments are available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. noon Monday thru Friday. COVID-19 protection requirements will be observed.  Masks and social distancing will be required.  In case of inclement weather, call the Senior Center to make sure the Senior Center is open.

What to Bring:
  1. Proof of identification (photo ID) for Taxpayer and Spouse
  2. Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents or a Social Security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration.
  3. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse, and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security Number.
  4. Birth dates for you, your spouse, and dependents on the tax return.
  5. Wage and income statements (Form W-2, 1099, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099- Misc., SSA-1099) from all employers and other sources of income.
  6. Interest and dividend statements from banks and brokerages (Form 1099. 1099-INT, 1099-DIV).
  7. Supporting documents for itemized deductions, if applicable.
  8. For Illinois homeowners, a copy of the real estate tax bill.
  9. A copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns, if available.
  10. Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check.
  11. To prepare a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
  12. Total paid to daycare provider and daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security Number or business Employer Identification Number.
  13. Form 1095-A, Affordable Health Care Statement if health insurance was purchased through the Health Care Exchange.

Decatur Public Library:

The Decatur Public Library will host three rounds of filing: February 18-27 for appointments for patrons 30 years old and under, March 1-13 for appointments for patrons 30-50 years old, and March 25-April 1 for appointments for patrons 50 years and over.

Call 217-424-6381 Monday-Friday between 1-4 pm to schedule your appointment. This service is by appointment only.

What to bring:

  • All W-2s, W2G, and 1099s for the year(s) you want to file.
  • Social security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) for all family members.
  • Valid photo identification for all family members.
  • Copies of last year’s State and Federal tax returns.
  • Proof of bank account number and routing number (if you choose direct deposit for your refund).
  • Total amount paid for daycare and the necessary ID numbers.
  • Property tax bill.
  • Amount spent on college expenses.
