Secretary of State to require teens to learn dangers of distracted driving

October 22, 2024 – The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is implementing a new requirement for teen drivers – and leaders hope it’ll help cut down on distracted driving.

Starting in January, teens will have to watch a video on the dangers of distracted driving when applying for a learner’s permit.

It’s just one part of a “multi-pronged” approach to combat distracted driving.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says his office is also working with the Illinois Department of Transportation to create new safety corridors with signs in areas with a high number of distracted driving crashes.

Another initiative would create a grant program for law enforcement to combat distracted driving.

Both of those plans still need approval from the General Assembly.
