December 1, 2024 – On Monday, the Decatur City Council is expected discuss the 2024 property tax levy and review the collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME.

Council will discuss and approve the 2024 property tax levy for the City’s portion of property taxes. The City of Decatur accounts for 16 percent of the total property tax bill and the Council has no control over the other 84 percent of the bill.
Council is expected to choose a levy amount between 5 and 7 percent higher than the previous year. With these options, a Decatur property owner whose property is valued at $135,000 (median average in Decatur) could see an increase of $14 annually at the most (7% increase to the levy). A 5% increase to the levy would result in NO increase in property taxes (for a $135,000 property) from the City of Decatur in 2025.
In addition, the City Council will review the collective bargaining agreement with the City’s AFSCME union. Highlights of this 4-year contract, which was already approved by the union, include a 4 percent increase in pay each year and a 50-mile-radius residency requirement.
The Decatur City Council meeting will be held Monday at 5:30pm in City Council Chambers. Read the full agenda here.
