April 6, 2025 – History of the Heartland is offering a scholarship to MacArthur High School seniors. The Doug Hagen Memorial Scholarship is an annual $500 scholarship created in memory of Loren Doug Hagen, a 1964 graduate of MacArthur High School. The scholarship is intended to promote community awareness and preserve the legacy of Hagen. Funding for the scholarship was supported by contributions from the MacArthur High School Class of 1964.

The scholarship is managed by the Decatur Public Schools Foundation. It is awarded annually to a graduating senior from MacArthur High School who has participated in student government and is planning to attend a college or university. Preference is given to students with a connection to military service, either through a family member or participation in a military-related program.

Loren Doug Hagen served as Student Council President at MacArthur High School. He graduated in 1968 from North Dakota State University with a degree in engineering. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, was commissioned as an officer, and trained as part of the Special Forces.

In 1971, while assigned to the Studies and Observations Group in South Vietnam, Hagen led a team on an intelligence mission in the Ashau Valley. The team encountered a significantly larger enemy force. Hagen was killed during the engagement while assisting an injured team member. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Contributions may be made by check to DPS Foundation, Attn: Hagen Fund, 101 West Cerro Gordo, Decatur, IL 62523, with “Hagen Fund” in the memo. Online donations can be made HERE.

MacArthur students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact their guidance counselor for an application.
