City of Decatur and Metro Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce to host series of MLK Jr. Day events

January 15, 2026- The City of Decatur has partnered with the Metro Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce again this year to hold events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Events start with Art Exhibit on Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday on Thursday, January 15, with an art show featuring work from DPS-61 high school students at Gallery 37 at3777 Woodford Street, Suite C, in Decatur. The exhibition will feature artwork centered on themes of justice, equality, and social responsibility inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. DPS-61 contest winners will be announced, and selected artwork will be displayed. The event is free and open to the public, with light refreshments and music provided.

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, a march will be held beginning at Mueller Park at 9:30 a.m. and stepping off at 10 a.m., proceeding to the Decatur Civic Center. The march will be led by Rev. Courtney Carson.

The following night, The MetroDecatur Black Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Gala on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Mt. Zion Convention Center. The event carries the theme “Injustice Anywhere Is A Threat To Justice Everywhere.” Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and there is a $75 donation for attendance. The keynote speaker will be State Representative Will Davis of Illinois’ 30th District.

On Monday, January 19th, The Metro Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce will host a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interdenominational Church Service at 6 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center, located at 321 E. Leafland Avenue in Decatur. The service will be led by Bishop James Wills, with a keynote address from Rev. Byron Hansbro, pastor of Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
