March 12, 2026 -The Macon County Conservation District and the Macon County Conservation Foundation will celebrate milestone anniversaries and upcoming environmental holidays with a large-scale community tree planting event next month.
The “Rooted in Community: 1,000 Tree Planting Event” will take place Saturday, April 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at a newly acquired property connecting Fort Daniel Conservation Area and Woodbine Farm at 7206 Sefton Road in Dalton City.
The event marks the 60th anniversary of the Macon County Conservation District and the 45th anniversary of the Macon County Conservation Foundation, while also recognizing Earth Day and Arbor Day.
Organizers plan to plant 1,000 trees as part of a long-term effort to restore 220 acres of former agricultural land to native habitat. The trees will help establish a 34-acre oak savanna, a once common Midwest ecosystem that has largely disappeared due to fire suppression and the loss of large grazing animals such as bison and elk.
Trees can be purchased for $20 each, and community members may also volunteer to help plant trees during the event. Individuals, families, businesses, school groups, churches and community organizations are invited to participate.
Additional information and registration details are available at MaconCCD.org.
