Macon County Fireworks Permit Applications Now Available Ahead of July 4 Deadline

May 4, 2026 – The Macon County Clerk’s Office is now accepting applications for fireworks permits for displays held outside incorporated areas of Macon County.

Applications are available at the Macon County Office Building in Decatur, and must be approved by the local fire protection district chief where the display will take place. Permits are not considered valid until they are returned to the Clerk’s Office for final signature and the county seal. The cost of a permit is 10 dollars.

Applicants must also provide proof of completing the annual Consumer Fireworks Test or show valid pyrotechnic or explosive identification, along with proof of at least one million dollars in insurance coverage.

Officials say Thursday, June 18, 2026 is the deadline to submit permit applications for July 4 displays, due to the office being closed for Juneteenth Independence Day on June 19. For displays planned on other dates, permits must be obtained at least 15 days in advance.

The Clerk’s Office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional closures scheduled for Memorial Dayand Juneteenth.
