May 12, 2026 – Living Lands & Waters is bringing thousands of free native tree saplings to Decatur later this month as part of the organization’s ongoing environmental restoration efforts.

The nonprofit river cleanup and conservation group will host a public tree giveaway event on May 19 at Fairview Park, where residents can pick up reserved saplings free of charge.

Organizers say more than 10,000 trees will be available through the event as part of the organization’s MillionTrees Project, which focuses on protecting and restoring river watersheds and local landscapes across the country.

Residents are encouraged to reserve trees online ahead of the event. Available species include Red Oak, Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak, and Pecan trees.

The giveaway will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Fairview Park on West Eldorado Street.

Since launching the MillionTrees Project in 2007, Living Lands & Waters says it has distributed millions of native trees throughout the Mississippi River watershed and beyond. The program now provides more than 175,000 free saplings annually to volunteers, schools, landowners, businesses, and community organizations.

According to the organization, its volunteers have removed more than 14 million pounds of debris from rivers nationwide, planted more than 2 million trees, and participated in thousands of environmental cleanup and education projects.

Residents interested in reserving saplings can register through Living Lands & Waters Tree Reservation Form.
