May 26, 2026 – The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved new rail safety improvements at the Wyckles Road highway-rail crossing in Warrensburg.

The project includes installation of a new automatic warning device and circuitry upgrades at the crossing along Illinois Central Railroad Company tracks.

According to the ICC, the improvements are designed to enhance safety for motorists traveling across railroad tracks in Macon County.

“Improving existing rail safety infrastructure is an essential part of protecting Illinois’ drivers when they travel across train tracks,” ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said in a statement. “The Grade Crossing Protection Fund enables the ICC to invest in life-saving safety upgrades like the one in Macon County.”

The Illinois Grade Crossing Protection Fund will cover 95 percent of the project cost, not to exceed $481,986. Illinois Central Railroad Company will pay the remaining signal design and installation costs, along with future maintenance expenses related to the warning devices.

The work must be completed within 18 months of the ICC order.

The Grade Crossing Protection Fund was established in 1955 and is funded through motor fuel tax revenue designated for rail safety improvements across Illinois. The Illinois General Assembly appropriates $42 million annually for the program.
