May 28, 2026 –  The Decatur Police Department and Kroger are once again partnering to help fight hunger in the community with the return of the “Pack the Cruiser” food drive this Saturday.

The four-hour donation event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kroger store located at 1818 South Airport Plaza in Decatur. Officers will collect food donations outside the store to benefit Northeast Community Fund.

Organizers say the drive comes at a critical time, as many children lose access to school meal programs during the summer months while local food banks continue facing increased demand and fewer donations.

“The timing of this drive is especially important because, when school is out, many children don’t have access to the nutrition they receive from school lunches,” said Jeff Tate, store leader of the Airport Plaza Kroger.

Community members are encouraged to donate items including peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, granola bars, applesauce, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese cups, canned tuna and canned chicken.

Recruiting Officer Kara Flannery says supporting the event reflects the department’s commitment to serving the community.

“We understand that food insecurity is far too common in Decatur, and if we can assist in any way to ensure no child goes without a healthy meal, we will do whatever it takes,” Flannery said.

Northeast Community Fund Executive Director Angel Lawrence said the event highlights the community’s compassion and support for local families in need.

Kroger and the Decatur Police Department are inviting the public to help “Pack the Cruiser” and support local families facing food insecurity this summer.
