Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity to Close Permanently

June 9, 2026 – Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity has announced it will formally cease operations, bringing to a close nearly 39 years of service to the community.

The decision comes after months of evaluation and discussions with Habitat for Humanity International. The organization had paused operations in November while leaders assessed its long-term sustainability and future viability.

Founded in 1987, Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity worked to provide safe and affordable housing opportunities for local families, helping build homes and strengthen neighborhoods throughout the Decatur area. During its nearly four decades of service, the nonprofit became known for its mission of helping families achieve stability and self-reliance through homeownership.

In a statement, the organization’s Board of Directors said the decision to close was made after careful consideration and was determined to be the most responsible course of action.

While the local affiliate is ending operations, officials emphasized that Habitat for Humanity’s mission will continue in the Decatur area through the organization’s statewide network. A partner Habitat affiliate will assume responsibility for supporting existing homeowners, ensuring services continue without interruption. Plans are also being developed to complete homes currently under construction through ongoing collaboration with other Habitat organizations.

“The Board of Directors is incredibly proud of the impact this organization has made in the community over the past 39 years,” the board said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the dedicated staff, volunteers, donors and partners who made this work possible.”

As part of the closure process, the organization’s commercial property, including the ReStore and associated buildings, will be offered for sale through an upcoming in-person auction. Additional information about the auction is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Items located within the facility will be sold through a separate virtual auction.

The closure marks the end of a chapter for one of Decatur’s longtime housing nonprofits, but officials say they remain confident that Habitat for Humanity’s work will continue to benefit families throughout Illinois.

Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity thanked the community for its decades of support and the opportunity to serve local families since its founding nearly four decades ago.
