June 9, 2026 – Veteran Decatur City Council member Patrick McDaniel has announced he will seek re-election in the Spring 2027 municipal election, pledging to continue focusing on public safety, infrastructure improvements, neighborhood revitalization and economic development.
McDaniel, a Decatur native and Vietnam veteran, said his decision to run is rooted in a lifelong commitment to public service and his desire to help strengthen the community he has called home for most of his life.
“I came back to my hometown after serving my country in the Vietnam conflict and want to continue to serve my community,” McDaniel said in announcing his candidacy.
McDaniel brings more than a decade of experience on the City Council. He was first elected in 2011 and served until 2021, including time as Mayor Pro Tem. Following his departure from the council, he served as Decatur’s Liquor Control Commissioner and as a member of the city’s Plan Commission before winning election to a new council term in 2023. He currently serves on the Decatur City Council.
As he begins his re-election campaign, McDaniel said his priorities remain consistent: supporting public safety, maintaining and improving city infrastructure, strengthening neighborhoods and encouraging economic growth that creates jobs and opportunities for current and future residents.
He said strong neighborhoods are among the most important foundations of a successful city and noted the importance of working closely with schools, healthcare providers, religious organizations, businesses and neighborhood groups to help Decatur thrive.
McDaniel also emphasized the importance of listening to residents and community stakeholders when addressing local challenges.
“I don’t have all the answers or solutions to some of the issues that confront our community,” McDaniel said. “But I will continue, as I always have, to take the time to listen to our citizens who might have solutions for solving those issues.”
McDaniel said he plans to continue meeting with residents throughout the city and working with local organizations as he seeks another term on the council.
The Spring 2027 municipal election will determine several city offices, including multiple seats on the Decatur City Council.
