June 17, 2026 – A local family is asking for the community’s support as their 3-year-old daughter faces a lengthy and difficult recovery after suffering devastating injuries in a dog attack in April.
Little August Scherer was seriously injured when she was attacked by a neighbor’s dog. According to her family, the attack caused severe cranial injuries, including a large wound to her forehead that removed skin, tissue, and muscle. She also sustained several additional wounds to her head.
“Due to the force of the bite, she was seconds away from being killed,” her family shared. “It was a terrifying experience, and we are so grateful that the dog’s owner was able to pull the dog off before it was too late.”
August was initially taken to a local emergency room, but her injuries required specialized treatment beyond what the facility could provide. She was transported by ambulance to a larger hospital where a team of plastic surgeons immediately began treating her injuries.
While surgeons were able to address many of her wounds, the family says the primary injury to her forehead was too extensive to be fully closed. Since the attack, August has endured painful wound cleanings and frequent bandage changes, along with other complications related to her recovery.
Doctors expect August’s healing process to take years and anticipate that she will require additional procedures in the future. The family now faces ongoing travel to out-of-town medical appointments, mounting medical expenses, and the emotional challenges that come with caring for a young child recovering from such a traumatic event.
To help offset those costs, family members have launched a fundraising effort to assist with medical procedures, supplies, travel expenses, and other care-related needs.
“This has been very traumatic for our whole family,” the family said. “We thank God our baby girl is still alive and with us. Your generosity will make a real difference in her recovery, and we are deeply grateful for any support you can offer.”
Community members wishing to support August and her family can do so through the fundraising campaign established on her behalf, which can be found HERE.
As August continues her recovery journey, her family says they remain hopeful and thankful for the support, prayers, and encouragement they have received from friends, neighbors, and the community.
