July 22, 2026 -Scovill Zoo has received a donated ultrasound machine from Decatur Memorial Hospital, giving veterinary staff the ability to perform advanced diagnostic imaging on-site for animals ranging from small birds to large mammals.
The ultrasound machine uses sound waves to create detailed internal images, allowing veterinarians to diagnose a variety of conditions without invasive procedures. Zoo officials say the equipment will reduce the need to transport animals for diagnostic imaging, minimizing stress while improving the speed of care.
“The gift of this ultrasound machine is a true game changer for Scovill Zoo,” said Zoo Director Heather Purdeu. “We can now provide prompt, precise care for our animals on-site, whether we are scanning the tiny guinea pigs or the majestic mountain lions.”
The machine’s probes can examine blood vessels, organs, soft tissue and other internal structures. It will also be used to monitor pregnancies in species including goats, red pandas and monkeys.
Veterinary specialists from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, who provide veterinary care at Scovill Zoo, will use the equipment to expand the zoo’s diagnostic capabilities and support earlier diagnosis and treatment.
“We were able to donate this equipment thanks to DMH’s continued investment in innovative technology,” said Dave Overlot, director of radiology at Decatur Memorial Hospital. “That investment allows us to take older equipment out of service, and when we do, we look for ways we can use it to support our community.”
Hospital officials say the donation reflects Memorial’s commitment to improving health beyond traditional patient care.
“Our mission at Memorial is to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health,” said Sarah Minott, radiology manager at Decatur Memorial Hospital. “Our community includes the incredible creatures at Scovill Zoo. This donation will help the zoo support their well-being and health.”
The collaboration highlights a shared commitment between Decatur Memorial Hospital and Scovill Zoo to enhance animal care while strengthening partnerships that benefit the Decatur community.
