August 11, 2026 – The Decatur Park District has officially reopened the newly renovated Garfield Park Playground, unveiling a wide range of improvements designed to enhance recreation and accessibility for families.

The completed project includes state-of-the-art playground equipment, centralized parking, adult and youth basketball courts, an additional pavilion, upgraded restroom facilities, security cameras and an interactive ball wall that encourages teamwork and sports skill development.

The renovation was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the City of Decatur, the Decatur Parks Foundation, the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation, Earthmover Credit Union, and support from State Representative Sue Scherer and State Senator Doris Turner, along with funding from the Decatur Park District.

Park District officials thanked the many community partners, staff and Board of Commissioners whose support helped transform Garfield Park into an updated neighborhood destination for recreation and community gatherings.
