August 18, 2026 – As the new school year begins, the Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding families and educators about state tax credits that can help offset qualified education expenses.

The Illinois K-12 Education Expense Tax Credit allows parents and legal guardians of full-time students under age 21 to claim a 25% tax credit on qualified education expenses exceeding $250. The maximum credit is $750 per household. Eligible expenses can include tuition, book rentals and lab fees.

Illinois educators may also qualify for the K-12 Instructional Materials and Supplies Tax Credit. Eligible teachers, counselors, principals, aides and other qualifying school employees can claim up to $500 for out-of-pocket classroom expenses. Married couples who both qualify and file jointly may claim up to $1,000.

The Illinois Department of Revenue advises taxpayers to keep physical or digital receipts for qualifying purchases.
