May 17, 2022 – History of the Heartland is celebrating Historic Preservation Week through Saturday, May 21, by holding events throughout the community.
A baseball and fans field discussion will take place Tuesday, May 17, at Doherty’s Pub and Pins in downtown Decatur from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Former Chicago Cub, Roe Skidmore and longtime worker at Fans Field, Don Umphreys will lead a night of baseball memories. History of the Heartland Chairman, Bret Robertson will moderate the discussion and question and answer time. Mark Allen will also have a display of Commodore original jerseys and other memorabilia at the event.
Attendees may order food or beverage off the menu. No admission charge to the event.
“Our vision is the more people we get inside these wonderful venues to tell the story and show the beauty, the more volunteers and support each venue will garner,” said Ayn Owens, director of History of the Heartland.
The Lincoln Theatre will host an Open House from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18.
The James Millikin Homestead located at 125 North Pine will host a special Open House on Saturday, May 21 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This event is in conjunction with History of the Heartland’s Historic Preservation Week. The open house will begin with several Model A and Model T cars at the Museum with an opportunity to have photos taken with the vintage vehicles. Mr. and Mrs. Millikin will be there to host the event and will also be available for the photos!
Owens said, “Our historic sites are thrilled to be able to show off their venues, something which has not been done regularly during the pandemic.”
A Lincoln Road Ride is set to depart from the Mt. Zion McDonald’s at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 21.
There is also set to be a History of the Heartland History Showcase on Saturday, May 21, at the following locations: Macon County Museum & Prairie Village, Culver House, Masonic Temple, and the Staley Museum.
“We encourage families to come to one or all of the events and enjoy what Decatur’s History has to Showcase,” Owens ended.
