September 5, 2020 – The Illinois Department of Transportation has renewed its call for more qualified drivers to apply for seasonal positions for snow-and-ice removal across Illinois. The department’s annual “snowbird” program hires temporary drivers every year on a full-time and on-call basis. The Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for plowing more than 45,000 across the state during winter.
“The calendar says September, but the snow-and-ice season will be upon us before we know it, as well as a great opportunity to help serve the public,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The snowbird program provides a vital service, but also opens the door to earn some extra income and possibly a lifelong career with IDOT.”
Certain participants in the program have been hired as full-time employees. Those in the program are required to respond to potential weather situations for snow-and-ice removal as well as stay prepared to work during emergency conditions at all times, which include nights, weekends and holidays. Applicants need a commercial driver’s license and will be required to submit a criminal background check. A drug and alcohol screening, pre-employment physical and vision testing are required. Veterans are encouraged to apply.
Applicants will be chosen on a basis of availability, job experience and qualifications.
