September 9, 2020 – With back-to-school being different this year, it is more important for children to create good habits for sleep and nutrition from the classroom or at home. HSHS Illinois hospitals are offering tips to help kids get healthy nourishment and a good night’s sleep. When attempting to start a healthy sleep schedule, set their bedtime incrementally earlier and eventually settle on a tie that works best for school. Consistency is important – so once a sleep schedule has been established, make sure to stick to it.
Another tip would be to limit time spent with electronics. Video games, cell phones, television and tablets all stimulate the brain and make it more difficult to go to sleep.
Parents can also set a good example is through demonstrating healthy eating habits. Get your kids involved and make a list of foods they like to eat. Work together with them to make a food plan. Start with proteins and teach your children about different options such as chicken, turkey, ham, string cheese, nuts, peanut butter and eggs. Pair those items with a few healthy sides such as vegetables, fruit, yogurt or cottage cheese. Feel free to offer them a treat with options like pretzels, trail mix with a few M & M’s, a small bag of chips or pudding.
