Pritzker Says State is Preparing for Budget Cuts

September 16, 2020 – Governor Pritzker said on Tuesday that the state is preparing to make budget cuts if Congress does not pass another COVID-19 relief package.  State lawmakers passed a budget in May that was balanced with uncertain federal bailout funds and dependent on voters passing a progressive income tax amendment in November that would enact a graduated income tax to impose higher tax rates on higher earners.  Pritzker said he has instructed his cabinet directors to prepare for at least 5% cuts for the current fiscal year and to submit a 2022 spending outline with a 10% reduction in appropriations.

“I can promise you that for everyone and anyone who got into public service, who actually wants to serve the public, this is a nightmare scenario,” Pritzker said.

The governor has called on President Trump and Congress to work together and complete a relief package.  According to Pritzker, many state and city services could feel the impact if Congress remains stagnant.
