Jun 21, 2022 | 4:35 PM

June 21, 2022 – The Decatur Police Department and the NAACP Decatur Branch announced that DPD has adopted the “Ten Shared Principles”, the result of a partnership between the Illinois NAACP State Conference and the ILACP (Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police).

The Ten Shared Principles represent the long-term dedication of both organizations to build trust in communities across the state. The Decatur Police Department is committed to defending and protecting the rights of all citizens and in keeping our community and citizens safe. They believe in the mantra “protect and serve.” They also believe in the fair and equal treatment of everyone.

Chief of Police Shane Brandel states, “It is important for the Decatur Police Department to constantly evaluate itself and seek ways to be better. With all of the issues our community faces today, it is imperative that we work together to find solutions. We start doing that by listening, trying to better understand each other, and building trust. The adoption of the Ten Shared Principles reinforces our values as an agency and puts us on the path to true collaboration with our citizens.”

Michael Diggs, president of the NAACP Decatur Branch, is in full support of the Affirmation of Shared Principles in keeping with the Illinois NAACP State Conference and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. Chief Brandel and the Decatur NAACP have been working together over the years to make sure these principles continue to work and be effective in the Decatur area.
