August 1, 2022 – Officials are highlighting the need for safety improvements at the US 51 and Leland St. Intersection in Assumption.
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, State Rep. Avery Bourne, Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp, Assumption Mayor Derek Page, Assumption Police Chief Brian Wade, and Assumption Fire Chief Herb Palmer held a press conference to highlight the dangers of the intersection, which most recently saw it’s second fatal crash in the last five years.
On July 12th, 15-year-old Keegan Virden and 16-year-old Conner Rowcliff were killed at the intersection. The first fatal crash in the last five years was on October 24th, 2018.
Officials say they have heard from concerned local citizens since the July 12th accident wanting action to be taken to improve the intersection’s safety.
According to an IDOT ten-year crash report from 2012-2022 for the intersection prior to the July 12th crash, there had been 29 crashes with 1 being fatal.
