July 5, 2022 – A standoff between Sheriff’s deputies and an armed man ended peacefully today.

Around 9am today,  Macon County Sheriff’s Deputies were at an address in the 1400 block of West Main Street to serve an eviction notice to the tenant. When deputies entered the residence they thought was vacant, they encountered a 58 year old male with a handgun. The man then retreated into a different location of the home.

Deputies were able to contain him to a single room in the residence and called for assistance. Officers from the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Park District, off-duty Macon County Deputies, and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team responded to assist in securing the scene and to begin negotiations. Roads were also blocked off as a safety precaution.

After 8 ½ hours of negotiations the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody and transported to hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The incident and ensuing standoff is being investigated further by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau. There were no injuries and no firearms were discharged.
