Decatur unemployment rate decreases over Jan

March 16, 2023 – The unemployment rate decreased in all fourteen Illinois metropolitan areas in January according to preliminary data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Jobs were up in all metro areas except one.

“Metro areas throughout the state continue to experience consistent job growth across industry sectors,” said Deputy Governor Andy Manar. “As new jobs are added statewide and across industries, job seekers and employers are encouraged to take advantage of the services and resources IDES offers in connecting workers and employers.”
In Decatur, the not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in January 2023, a decrease of -1.6 percentage points from January 2022. There were an estimated 2,413 unemployed people in the labor force in January 2023.
The number of total nonfarm jobs in the Decatur metro area increased by +800 compared to a year ago.
Employment increased in Construction and Mining (+200), Other Services (+200). Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities (+200), Government (+200), and Leisure and Hospitality (+100).
Payrolls were unchanged in Educational and Health Services, Professional and Business Services, Information, Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade, and Financial Activities.
January payrolls declined in Retail Trade (-100).
