June 29, 2023 – The Macon County Conservation District will host its first Unplug Illinois Day this July, encouraging locals to take a break from devices and screen time to explore opportunities to enjoy the outdoors throughout the county.
An initiative started by the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association in 2014, Unplug Illinois is a statewide community awareness campaign to educate community members about the importance of parks, recreation and conservation areas’ offerings. No matter the size of the park or participating community, these pop-up days throughout the state aim to show how outdoor play can benefit all, no matter their age. Macon County will host its inaugural version of the event on Saturday, July 15 from 1-4 p.m. at Rock Springs Conservation Area.
“This is a day for people to unplug from devices, and ‘plug into’ play, adventure, nature, family, and fun,” said Ashton Nunn, Macon County Conservation District’s Marketing Specialist, in a press release. “We’re really excited to have this event this year and to be a part of this initiative to help people realize all the value areas like ours have in their lives.”
The Conservation District said in the release their goal with the event is to limit significant screen time usage by children and encourage them to spend more time outdoors. A bubble-making station, chalk obstacle course, hikes and scavenger hunts will be among the offerings available for families to enjoy. Although the day promotes “unplugging” from devices and screens, Unplug Illinois also promotes “plugging in” to area communities through year-long programming.
“We provide a lot of educational opportunities, including summer camps, field trips and evening and weekend programs—many of which are free or low cost—and we would love to see more members of the community engaging in nature and exploring the activities we have to offer at the Conservation District,” said Alysia Callison, Macon County Conservation District’s Director of Program Services.
