September 11, 2023 -Sarah German, 18, is a young woman with a heartfelt mission. Her mom’s fight against adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) prompted her to start CureACC, a nonprofit organization that strives to improve and extend the quality of life for terminal cancer patients when she was 12 years old.
German, through CureACC, donated 125 cancer care packages to Memorial Cancer Care patients at Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH). Each care package contained a tote bag, a pair of socks, a stuffed animal, Queasy drops, a Chemo Beanie hat, nail buffer and a stress ball. The donation was part of CureACC’s efforts to provide nearly 500 care packages to cancer centers throughout central Illinois.
“The patients truly appreciate the care packages from Sarah,” said Jill Andrews, administrative director for Radiation Oncology at DMH. “Anything with a personal touch makes them feel comforted and cared for even more while they are receiving treatment. Knowing that someone cares and puts in time and effort to bring something to them truly brings them joy.”
German will begin her college career at Auburn University this fall, but she hopes to continue her CureACC work once she gets settled in and make care package donations to hospitals in Alabama.
“Sarah truly has a deep-rooted passion for carrying on her mother’s legacy,” said Julie Bilbrey, executive director of Decatur Memorial Foundation. “We are grateful for the years of hard work she has put into CureACC, and we know her care packages will provide comfort, hope and joy to many individuals who are undergoing treatment at DMH.”
