December 23, 2024 –The holiday season is a time for family gatherings and large meals, but it also brings an increased risk of foodborne illness if leftovers are not handled properly. Health officials are reminding residents to follow basic food safety practices to keep meals safe for the entire family.
Cooked foods should be cooled quickly and stored in shallow, airtight containers in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking. Perishable items, including meats, poultry, and dairy products, should not be left at room temperature for extended periods. Leftovers can generally be safely kept in the refrigerator for three to four days, or frozen for longer storage.
When reheating leftovers, foods should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any bacteria that may have developed. Sauces, gravies, and soups should be stirred and heated thoroughly to ensure even warming.
Health officials also advise labeling containers with the date they were prepared to keep track of freshness, and to discard any food that looks or smells questionable. Following these simple guidelines can help families enjoy holiday meals safely and reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
