June 16, 2026 – The Decatur Bean Ballers and Millikin University are inviting Central Illinois residents to become part of the region’s newest summer tradition by supporting the city’s Prospect League baseball team and the players who represent communities across Illinois and beyond.

At a recent press conference, Lori Kerans, Millikin University’s Vice President for Athletics and Community Engagement, and Glen Gutek, representing the team’s ownership group, encouraged baseball fans, families and community members to attend games at Workman Family Baseball Field and help create a hometown atmosphere for players chasing their dreams of playing at the next level.

“Decatur is definitely a baseball town,” Kerans said. “It is known for such legends as Del Unser, Bill Madlock, Kevin Koslofski, Roe Skidmore and Jeff Innis. Millikin is proud to be part of bringing baseball back.”

The Bean Ballers are one of 20 teams competing in the Prospect League, a premier collegiate summer baseball league that attracts talented players from around the country and internationally. The roster includes players from local communities such as Taylorville, Shelbyville and Newton, alongside athletes from colleges and universities nationwide.

Games are played at Workman Family Baseball Field, 1271 W. Decatur Street, where organizers say fans can expect affordable entertainment and a family-friendly atmosphere throughout the summer.

“Family fun at its finest” has become a rallying cry for the organization as it works to build community support around the inaugural season.

For players, the energy from the stands can make a significant difference.

Gage Reynolds of Newton, IL, one of the Bean Ballers players, said playing before larger crowds creates a memorable experience.

“Sometimes, honestly, it’s pretty intimidating,” Reynolds said. “It’s a lot of fun, though, because you just never know who’s going to show up, and just seeing a bunch of little kids there and being a role model is awesome.”

When asked whether crowd size affects the team, Reynolds didn’t hesitate.

“Yes, 100 percent,” he said.

The organization is also asking local businesses to become involved. Through its “Can You Feed Our Players?” initiative, the Bean Ballers are seeking restaurants and caterers willing to provide post-game meals for approximately 75 players following home games. Participating businesses receive recognition through social media, in-game promotions, complimentary tickets and other sponsorship opportunities.

Fans will find a variety of special promotions throughout the season:

  • Tuesday Nights: $2 admission.
  • June 19: Military Appreciation Night with free admission for active military members and veterans.
  • June 27: Faith and Family Night in partnership with First Christian Church.
  • June 28: Youth League Day. Gates open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. first pitch. Youth players wearing their league jerseys receive free admission and can run the bases after the game.
  • July 2: Educators Night with free admission for teachers.

For most home games, gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate.

Organizers hope the community will embrace the team and help create an atmosphere that reflects Decatur’s longstanding baseball tradition while supporting a new generation of players.
