December 28, 2025 –As holiday gift giving winds down, consumer advocates are urging consumers to review return and exchange policies — whether in stores or online. Understanding how returns work can help avoid post-holiday frustration, especially with electronics, clearance items, or gifts that might need to be exchanged.
In Illinois, there is no state law that requires retailers to accept returns, but there are rules about how return policies are presented. Retailers who choose to offer returns and refunds must clearly disclosetheir policy at the point of sale, either in the store or on receipts, and any associated fees — such as restocking charges — must be prominently displayed. If a retailer advertises a specific return timeframe or a refund policy, they are generally required to honor those terms under consumer protection laws. If a retailer does not post any return policy, Illinois law assumes returns of unused, undamaged merchandise within a reasonable period — commonly interpreted as around 30 days — and with proof of purchase.
Illinois consumer protection laws also prohibit deceptive or misleading statements about return terms, so advertised policies must match what is actually offered. Additionally, consumers who purchaseitems through telephone or mail order have certain federal protections, including the right to cancel some contracts within three business days and the requirement that sellers ship goods within stated timeframes or refund the purchase.
For online shoppers, return policies can vary significantly by retailer. E-commerce giant Amazon has once again extended its holiday return window for the 2025 season, allowing most items purchasedbetween November 1 and December 31 to be returned through January 31, 2026. Some exceptions apply: certain branded products, such as Apple items, generally must be returned earlier — by January 15, 2026 — and other goods like perishables, customized products, certain digital items, and automotive-related purchases are not returnable. Refunds typically depend on the item’s condition and the seller’s guidelines, and shoppers are encouraged to review product-specific return eligibility before buying.
Even with extended return windows, experts recommend saving receipts or order confirmations, checking for any restocking fees or shipping charges, and understanding whether refunds are issued to the original payment method or as store credit. Many retailers — both brick-and-mortar and online — adjust their return timelines during the holidays, but policies on electronics, final-sale merchandise, and clearance items may still be more restrictive.
Taking a few minutes to understand return policies can make holiday shopping more satisfying and reduce the likelihood of surprises when returning gifts or online purchases.
