April 20, 2025 Richland Community College is highlighting its impact on the regional economy as part of a nationwide observance of Community College Month.

The annual campaign, led by a national association of college trustees, aims to raise awareness about the role community colleges play in workforce development and expanding access to education.

According to a recent report analyzing data from the 2023–2024 academic year, the college and its students support one out of every 32 jobs across its service area, which includes multiple counties in central Illinois. The report also found that former students contributed an estimated $166 million in added income to the regional economy during that time, supporting nearly 2,000 jobs.

The analysis indicates that students who attend the college see a financial return on their education, with higher future earnings compared to their initial investment. It also suggests that public funding for the institution generates a return to taxpayers over time through increased tax revenue.

College officials say a range of programs contributes to that impact, including dual credit opportunities for high school students, career and technical education pathways, and workforce training programs designed to meet local industry needs. Some initiatives also focus on helping adults overcome barriers to employment through training and financial support.

Administrators say those efforts are aimed at preparing students for in-demand careers while supporting economic growth in the region.
